The Act of Giving

A Small Act discusses the importance of kindess and the potentially huge repursussions of any small act of giving.

In the film, Hilde Back’s makes a donation toward the sponsorship of a Kenyan child’s education. Years later, she discovers that her act has lead to the Harvard education of Chris Mburu and then on to him becoming a human rights lawyer for the UN. Chris has now set up his own educational sponsorship programme - The Hilde Back Foundation, named after his sponsor.

Education in Kenya is crucial to the direction a child’s life may take. The top students in Mukubu primary school are in the exact same situation as Chris once was. They are bright, but can’t afford to pay school fees. With the creation of Chris’ fund, these students have new hope. But the program is small and only the most outstanding students can be awarded the opportunity to further their education.

The film highlights the reality of the African education system which in some areas, depends on such sponsorship programmes to liberate generations from a cycle of poverty.

The film urges people to consider any small act of kindness but especially to further the education of our children. A donation to your local school or a day volunteering can make a bigger difference than you think and is worthwhile for all parties involved!
