Locked in a dark basement, Laura, a psychiatrist in her early thirties, contemplates in horror a video where a man confesses to be a serial killer. His name is Ramon, an apparently normal man in his forties, who seems to be quite harmless. Gagged and bound to a chair, Laura realizes that it’s the same person who has kidnapped her and who is now pacing in the shadows.

Ramon continues to speak as he turns off the television. He walks over to her, takes off the gag and challenges Laura to play the ‘Word Game’. The game begins and if she wins, she gets to go free, but if she loses…

The “Word Game” is the name of a Spanish children’s game, and also happens to be what KILLING WORDS is based on, but where we ask ourselves; what are the game’s true limits? A psychological thriller that moves somewhere between the truth and deceit, and the past and present. Ramón and Laura. Tormentor and tormented. Which of the two is the real victim of the story?

The narrative rhythm needed in the telling of this story is what really attracted me to this film. Far from my own writing, my particular magic world... Killing words allows me to explore the true depths of the actor’s world and investigate a new gender of filmmaking. Make a film with only four actors, two sets and only a few location shots... is quite a challenge, but not only am I surrounded by a great team, I also am fortunate enough to count on a wonderful group of actors that make this fantastic story even better.

It would be impossible to mention Killing Words without mentioning La huella o La muerte y la doncella in the same breath. And that’s precisely what it is; an adaptation of a play. Although the main story is based on two people in a basement, the story itself is told through certain filmmaking techniques (for example; flash back), new spaces, and characters.

In conclusion; Killing words is a thriller where nothing is what it seems to be. A complicated puzzle where all the pieces won’t fit together until... the very end.
